New York Congressman Eric Massa
The health care town hall meetings have provided lots of fodder for those who are concerned about their representatives. New York Congressman Eric Massa has added to the pile with his on camera admission that he would vote against the interests of the voters in his district.
Some might argue that in our representative republic, this is a display of courage. The Founding Fathers were afraid of mob rule and were fearful of “pure” democracy being not much different than a mob. At TfTL, we agree with the sentiment. The idea is that a good representative will prevent the mob from doing something stupid – like pushing for unconstitutional legislation. Historically, this has been the case. In Eric Massa’s situation we have the opposite. The “mob”, if that’s what you want to call it, is pushing to have him vote against an unconstitutional measure.
It’s this first term congressman learned… being courageous only counts if you’re right.
